Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) UK Olympiad

Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) UK Olympiad

Bosworth A2 students recently sat a Chemistry Challenge which is supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry. From this A2 group we are proud to report we have achieved 1 Gold and 2 Silver Awards.

Round one consists of a challenging written test of chemical knowledge and gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded to high-scoring students, while the top-performing students from participating UK schools are chosen by the Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad Selection Committee to progress to Round two.

The Round one written tests are completed at the participating school and papers are marked by teachers from that school. The test questions are:

  • based on real-world chemistry problems that often stimulate much debate, raising awareness of what chemistry is all about
  • an opportunity to develop and showcase some of the skills required for studying Chemistry at university and beyond

The aim of the competition is to stretch and challenge students interested in chemistry, and it provides an excellent experience for anyone considering taking their studies further. It is designed to be accessible to Year 13 students but ensures to take them significantly beyond the syllabus and encourage them to think about science in the way they would at university.

The Paper was completed this year by nearly 5,400 candidates! The Award boundaries are: Gold, Silver, Copper, No Award and all winners receive a certificate along with a report on the paper and a question commentary. Overall, 419 students won Gold awards (7.8%), 1,374 students won Silver awards (25.5%) and 1,619 students won Bronze awards (30%).

Mrs Maria Johnstone, Head of Chemistry (pictured above) believes it is important for students to be tested beyond just the syllabus and tells us, “In an increasingly competitive environment for the students applying for a university course in their A2 year, it is imperative that candidates show involvement in Olympiad-style exams and prove enthusiasm for chemistry beyond the taught topics.”
